Orvieto Classico Superiore Vendemmia Tardiva: A Timeless Nectar Born of Tradition
Orvieto Classico Superiore DOC Vendemmia Tardiva by Il Palazzone is a poetic tribute to the ancient, historical calling of the Orvieto region for crafting magnificent sweet wines. First released with the historic 1985 vintage, this label captures the very essence of local heritage, reviving time-honored techniques to create a precious dessert wine that bridges past and present with absolute grace.
The blueprint for this liquid gold lies in patience and microclimate harmony. The traditional grape varieties of Orvieto thrive on sedimentary, clay-rich hillside plots with a cool North-East exposure, essential for preserving the grapes’ vibrant natural acidity. The harvest is deliberately delayed: this late harvest (vendemmia tardiva) allows the clusters to overripen on the vine, naturally concentrating sugars and aromatic compounds within each berry. In the cellar, the whole clusters undergo a gentle, soft pressing, followed by a slow fermentation in stainless steel to shield the pristine purity of the fruit.
In the glass, it reveals a remarkably refined, rich, and enveloping sweet profile. The nose unfolds an alluring bouquet of wildflower honey, dried apricot, candied orange peel, and delicate floral-spiced undertones. On the palate, the sip is silky, warm, and luxuriously sweet, yet masterfully balanced by a refreshing backbone that keeps the finish bright, lively, and endlessly elegant. A sophisticated choice for contemplation, it pairs magnificently with almond tarts, traditional Italian pastries, or intensely flavored blue and aged cheeses.
