Description
The 2022 vintage was warm, but Bolgheri’s favorable microclimate allowed for a good balance between acidity and freshness.
Autumn saw initially below-average temperatures, with abundant rainfall and a drop in temperature at the end of November that promoted the plants’ vegetative halt and the natural elimination of pests. Rain continued through the winter, ensuring a good water reserve. Spring began with above-average temperatures, interrupted by a brief and sudden temperature drop that caused bud selection in early vineyards. This reduced the plants’ load and allowed for proper pigmentation and ripening of the grapes. The summer was characterized by intense heat, but thanks to Bolgheri’s microclimate and the hillside location of the vineyards, there were no signs of stress in the vines. An important rainfall in mid-August led to a drop in temperature, which in turn favored the proper ripening of the grapes.
The result of this climate is a perfect balance between technical ripeness and phenolic maturity, with healthy grapes and excellent lignification of the seeds as well as the stems. The grape harvest, carried out by hand, began in the first days of September with the grapes from the younger vineyards and then continued with Cabernet Sauvignon from the vineyards at lower altitudes, ending with those on the hills over 300 meters above sea level (Vigna di Castiglioncello). The harvesting operations were completed at the end of September. After a careful selection of the grapes, a gentle pressing is carried out followed by controlled alcoholic fermentations, completed by the end of October. The macerations were moderate, lasting from 13 to 18 days, with optimal extraction in terms of polyphenols and aromas. After spontaneous malolactic fermentation, concluded at the end of November, the wine underwent a period of aging in wood for about 23 months, then it was racked into stainless steel tanks for the final phase of selection of the masses before blending.
